Theres a strong line-up assembled at Torrey Pines Golf Club in California this week for the Farmers Insurance Open beginning on Thursday. Length is one of the main contributory factors this week as Torrey Pines South is the longest course on the PGA Tour measured at 7,698 yards. The tournament is played on the clubs north and south courses and an interesting stat is that no first time visitor has ever walked away with the title. The key in the past is to shoot low on the North course, ranked the seventh easiest on tour the last five winners have averaged 66 strokes on this track. Its no real surprise that bombers have a good record here with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Nick Watney and Bubba Watson all recent winners.
With the length and the relatively small greens, the greens in regulation stats are going to be very important. Last years winner Bubba Watson led these stats twelve months ago missing just thirteen greens in regulation in his four rounds, the lowest in the field.
2010 champion Nick Watney heads the betting with Stanjames.com. The Las Vegas based 30 year old was twice a winner on the PGA Tour last year including the valuable WGC-Cadillac at Doral. His form history dictates that he goes well fresh and finished tied for twelfth at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions three weeks ago. Other than the win here, he also has three other top ten finishes from his seven appearances including a tied sixth spot twelve months ago. Its with this in mind that its no surprise that Stan James go 12/1 favourite about Watney.
Phil Mickelson made his seasonal debut last week in the Humana Challenge and gave his fans the usual rollercoaster ride. The Californian was at one point five over par during his second round but managed to survive the cut to finish well up the field on ten under par. This tournament is practically a homer for Mickelson who is based in San Diego, so its no surprise that hes near the top of the betting, with Stan James making him their 14/1 clear second favourite. He finished second here last week and won way back in 2001 and is always one to watch.
Brandt Snedeker catches the eye further down the betting at odds of 22/1. Despite having hip surgery in the winter, the Tennessee resident came out all gunsblazing last week finishing eighth in the Humana with the fourth best putting stats. He loves Torrey Pines having finished in the top ten three times out of his five starts and he looks to have a good each-way shout again in 2012.
Further down the betting Camilo Villegasalso catches theeye following a good performance last week in the Humana Challenge. The Colombian had a 2011 to forget for the most part but seemed to be re-finding some form at the end of the season when stringing a run of top-ten finishes together. He tailed off a bit last week after sharing the first round lead but he only carded one bogey and one double all week which suggests his game was in good order. Hes adjusted his grip slightly in the off season to eradicate a pull hookwhich should really help his game and has course form too, having finished tied for third here three years ago. At 40/1 with Stan James Villegas can give you a run for your money.
Finally we like the look of D.A Points this weekalso at 40/1 with Stan James. The Florida resident carded his first win on tour last season atPebble Beach and has a good record at this time of year. Hes no stranger toTorrey Pines having finished in the top ten on his last two visits, including a fifth place finish last season. Hes got off to a good start in 2012 finishing tied for twelfth and sixth in the two Hawaii events and can give you another run for your money here.
